Let the record show, Paul McCartney remains the greatest musician alive - as talented and relevant as ever.

On Wednesday and Thursday, before a sold out crowd at Historic Fenway Park, McCartney proved age is just a number for the Walrus. The two shows featured roaring sets of nearly 40 songs spanning McCartney's more than nearly five decades of hits.

Wednesday evening at 7:45 sharp as the sun began to set over America's ballpark, the familiar first riffs of "Drive My Car" rippled through the excited crowd and an equally familiar roar lifted young and old out of their seats. Soon 60 somethings were bumping booties with tattooed teenagers, a testament to the timelessness of McCartney's incredible songbook.

The songs range from Beatles mega-hits, McCartney Solo Work, Wings gems and even some new, yet still relevant songs from McCartney's electronic music experiment, the Firemen. McCartney's shows still after all of these years are great communal experiences, with mass singalongs of the thunderous piano masters like "Let it Be," "Hey Jude," and "Live and Let Die" complete with epic fireworks explosions blasting over the Boston skyline. No detail is over the top for the living link to Beatlemania and a classier time in pop culture long past.

McCartney also took time as always to reference the memories of great friends who have since passed. He dusted off a ukulele given to him by George Harrison to play a stirring version of "Something." He also sang "My Love" for his wife and bandmate Linda who died of breast cancer in 1998. And with a tear in his eye, he recounted the things he never had the time to say to friend and songwriting partner John Lennon before performing the soulful ode "Here Today."

"Let's take the mood from the almost suicidal," McCartney joked before moving on to his silly modern jingle "Dance Tonight" of IPod fame. His humor has remained remarkably modest and colloquial.

Perhaps the most amazing feat of the night was the amazing amount of energy and effort McCartney still puts into his live performances. The man arguably has more money, fame, and hits than any artists in history, but it is a testament to his professionalism and talent that while he is overqualified for the senior citizen discount, he feels no need to half ass it.

Aside from the fist fight, the Tracy Chapman concert was awesome! I bet that sentence hasn't been said many times.

So we went to see the amazingly talented folk pioneer Tracy Chapman perform at the Calvin Theater on Saturday. Tracy was amazing. She played a set littered with classic favorites like "Fast Car," "The Promise," " Smoke and Ashes," "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight," and "Give Me One Reason." In addition, she also played a number of new tracks including "Sing For You" and "Our Bright Future." She also played stirring covers of Prince's "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man" and Bob Marley's "Get Up Stand Up."

The night began with a great opening set from soulful indie newcomer Gaby Moreno. A native of Guatemala, she sings from the heart with the emotion of a young Sinead O'Connor, but with the funk of artists like Tracy Chapman herself.

Following Moreno, a long wait for Tracy Chapman to take the stage gave the crowd an anxious/excited energy. Soon Chapman soothed any tension with a crooning of "Sing For You."

While she continued to play the classics, the energy increased with each song. Finally, just as the end of the regular set came to a close, and Tracy and her band left the stage, two young girls broke out into a fist fight right next to me, endangering nearby handicapped guests. I was then forced to restrain one of the young girls, while security figured out how to handle the obviously intoxicated girls.

This incident gave me many thoughts not limited to:

Who gets into a fight at a Tracy Chapman concert?

What has our World come to when handicapped people cannot feel safe at a folk concert?

What precautions could the event staff have taken to prevent this type of escalation.

It seemed just as we got the fight under control, Tracey and band took the stage for an encore of Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up." It seemed awkwardly inappropriate for the moment. However, the rendition was really special.

All and all the night turned out to be interesting, exciting, and pretty awesome. If you ever get the chance to see Tracy live, she is not to be missed. And her crowds are almost as engaging as her great songs.

Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, died yesterday at 50. He will be remembered for many things, both controversial and celebrated.

I am torn about the very unique legacy. However, I think we can all agree that though Michael's life was many things, it was never easy.

I thought it would be appropriate to add a couple of Highlights Michael's career.

Canuck Setting Celine Right

I know that your thinking "The only thing to come out of Canada is Celine and Nickelback." Well Patrick Watson is here to set you right.

Watson has been on the "scene" since the Expos were still a team. In 2003 he released his first Album "Ordinary Day," an impressive first at bat despite little fan fare. Watson's sound can be described as dreamy, eery even. It has traces of Radiohead and Sigur Ros, but Watson voice laid over the magical tracks is what makes the difference.

Throughout the next couple of years, Watson's work as a live artists led to stints with a wide variety of greats including Feist and Phillip Glass. In 2006, he and his band were invited to tour Europe with James Brown before the release of their second effort "Close to Paradise."

"Close to Paradise" became a new animal for the band. Soon Watson became a household Canadian name like poutine and râpée. The album went gold in Canada and won the Polaris Prize. To date the album has sold more than 100,000 copies.

This Spring, Watson released the follow up to "Close to Paradise," a much richer sounding "Wooden Arms." In a good way it lacks the pop of Watson's earlier releases and sticks to the thicker, more texturized orchestral rock and dark lyrics. Well done all around.

Cable Access' Finest

Alas, I think I have found the funniest things ever created in the 80s, and we all know that is not an easy task. Thanks to the amazing nostalgic power of Youtube and the incredible uploading efforts of one intuitive user named Sharpeworld, the world has been reunited with the 1980s cable access clasic "Stairway to Stardom."

The show is a regular Smörgåsbord of awkward, spandex-wearing, mullet-rocking, color guard loving, talent show fun. I could go on and on about how ridiculous some of the guests on this show are, but why when I can just show you.

First off, we should introduce Mr. Frank Masi, the host of Stairway to Stardom. Masi, whose gold chain necklace, pornstar mustache, and sweet threads make him look like the homepage to the sex offender registry Web page, is the perfect host to the lineup of freaks and creeps that you will soon know and love. Here Masi opens the show with his own delightful theme song.

Next up we have the incredibly creepy Dante. In fact, Dante is so creepy Mr. Masi seems to ask our permission before he unleashes the hairy man without a last name to sing the theme from "Exodus."

Next up we have the Hal Green Trio performing "I Can't Get started." I can honestly say this may be the oldest/most of tone band I have ever heard. If you are every having trouble with annoying neighbors, put this ditty up as high as it can go. They will be gone in no time.

Next we have the stunning duo of Horowitz and Spector doing their best to emulate SNL's Sweeney Sisters with their cabaret performance of "Diet Pills."

I don't really have to try to make fun of the next video. Here is tap dancer Jennefer Jorgensen tapping to a Dixie Medley. I personally love her car wash inspired arm bands.

Apparently Jennifer lent her outfit to young Melissa Ann Ledwon who really rocks the air piano here with an all out party to the elevator song "They're Playing Our Song."

Something makes me think the next performance was Mr. Masi's idea. Here is the eerily underage performance of Louise Mascia singing "Let Me Entertain You." *Please note if you have pets you might want to turn the volume down a little before playing this one.

The folks at Stairway to Stardom really stepped up the budge for Mark Conner's performance of his original song "I Got Eyes." Note the bitchin' special effects and the incredible set design.

The Mellowettes were apparently too busy picking out backwards sweaters. Mr. Masi also seems confused with this one deeming the girls the "Mellonettes".... classic.

Next, get ready for the sweet sweet moves of Raymond Lucky. I can almost taste the courvoisier.

The next performer falls into the deadly awkward category. Young Lola "L-O-L-A" Perazzo performes her vesion of Michael Jackson's Thriller while wearing a flesh suit. At the end creepy Mr. Masi asks her for a kiss! Ewwww.

I don't say this lightly, but the next one nearly made me pee my pants. Michelle Sutlovich single-handedly puts herself in the lead as my Halloween costume next year with her "Fame" inspired dance. If Tina Turner and Edie Beale had a child with ADHD, this would be the result.

And now for a commercial break from the charismatic performer/horrible reader, Evie Day.

I know what your thinking: "This is great but what about a meaningful message for the kids." Well, lucky for you, rapper BJ the Messenger has your answer with his ski-mask inspired rap "Crackhead." Something makes me think this one hits a little close to home for BJ. One youtube subscriber put it best when they said "he wears the ski mask so he doesn't get burned by the fire he spits."

The funk drips off Reason to Live's performance of "Funky Groove."

Have you ever wondered how the love of a hutch can be embodied? Perhaps you've considered bashing someones brains into the God Damn radiator? Precious Taft ponders those subjects and more in the following video.

Finally, I have saved my personal favorite for last. Straight out of the mall and into your home, Tiffany impersonator Lucille Cataldo (a.k.a. Teasa Louise), performs her original hit "Hairdresser Hairdresser" while wearing perhaps the greatest black pleather suit I have ever witnessed.

Ironically An Horse at Iron Horse

On your mark. Get set. Go!

Not to wear out the puns, but An Horse is really poised to make their imprint as the newest in a line of funky pop duos to emerge in recent years. The melodic/smart/latte-loving pop sound of the Australian duo of Kate Cooper and Damon Cox is just itching to jump into the newest Old Navy ads.

I admit, this kind of Tegan and Sara, Bell and Sebastian sound is not for everyone all-day, everyday, however I guarantee your toes will have difficulty resisting an all out tapfest during songs like "Postcards." Coincidentally, Mercedes Benz thinks similary. The luxury car company recently used the song in a commercial. Could the zippy sound of An Horse be enough to bail out the auto-trauma stiking the nation? I'm doubtful.

The great thing about An Horse: They want to travel all the way from Australia to share their love and tunes with the Valley. Ok, they were going to be in the states for a tour anyways, but we can pretend this trip is intimate can't we?I suggest you come see them will fellow indie troubadour Telekinesis (Michael Benjamin Lerner) at the Iron Horse on June 12. The Valley Welcomes Ray Lamontagne "Home"

It was only a decade ago that Ray Lamontagne was working 65 hours a week in a shoe factory tucked away in the wintry depths of Lewiston, Maine. A shy and in some respects pained man, Lamontagne had no idea that years later he would spring onto the International music scene as perhaps one of the most groundbreaking new artists of the 21st century.

A mix of the bold introspection of Bob Dylan, the rich raspy bellow of Van Morrison, and the shy, cold demeanor of Kurt Cobain - Lamontagne is a rare blend of qualities. And though he draws many comparisons to great legends, he continues to blaze his own path with little regard for criticism.

In early 2005, I had a chance to sit down with Lamontagne as he began touring to support his first major release, "Trouble." Check out the January 2005 article "He Could Be the Next Ray Lamontagne" in the Massachusetts Daily Collegian here. He was shy, very intelligent, and semeed to give of the sort of eccentric energy that could mean the difference between a mediocre folk musician and a future legend.

Following the release of "Trouble" Lamontagne received immediate commercial success. Since, the album has sold over 500,000 copies. The Follow-up, 2006's "'Til the Sun Turns Black" peaked at #28 on the Billboard Music Charts, and his latest release "Gossip in the Grain" could prove to be his most successful, debuting at #3 on the Billboard charts.

Much of Lamontagne's success can be attributed to his great ability to provide a consistent sound and energy throughout his albums. Very few artists have figured out how to obtain a smooth flow from tune to tune, but it is apparent that Lamontagne's music comes from the heart, especially his darker material. It is also notable to mention that he has worked with the amazing producer Ethan Johns of Rufus Wainwright, Ryan Adams, and Kings of Leon fame.

On Wednesday, Lamontagne visited the Valley for a set at the Calvin theater. He has played in the Valley several times in the past, but this is the first show he has played since he acquired a long-vacant farmhouse on Bullitt Road in nearby Ashfield, MA. While this marked a sort of homecoming, the singer/songwriter did not make mention of the purchase during the show.

The set was spectacular however. Following a rather lackluster, low-energy performance from the opening act the Low Anthem, Lamontagne and a full band shuffle out onto what was a simple but beautiful stage. The performers stood in front of a plain crinkled backdrop, underneath their own uniquely colored spotlights. During the entire nearly 2-hour performance, the band seemed completely polished.

Lamontagne seemed less anxious of a performer than he was just a few short years ago, but still keeps his act about the music. He performed a range of new and old hits including "Trouble," "Jolene," "Three More Days," "Ally, You Ought to Be a Married Woman Now," and "Be Here Now."

The only gaffe of the show appeared when Lamontagne forgot the lyrics during his opening number "You Are the Best Thing." He nervously quipped "I'll just sing this part instead" and kept going with the performance.

All in all the show was out of this World. His voice is impeccable, his band was hot, and his lyrics seem to hit a place closer to your soul than most artists can get.

'Shakey' Returns with a Pup and a Sweet Ride

Good News! The ever-prolific rock/country/folk music God, Neil "Shakey" Young has announced the release of his newest studio album "Fork in the Road" to hit the shelves on April 7th via Reprise Records.

Young recorded the album between tour stops in 2008, and industry professionals suggest the new album is more emotional than Youngs ultra-political last two albums "Living with War" and "Chrome Dreams II."

Young also has also spent time during the last couple of years working on developing new fuel technologies. Young has turned his 1959 Lincoln Continental into an alternative energy vehicle.

We were lucky enough to get our hands on a couple of new videos for the song "Johnny Magic" which Young recorded himself in the aforementioned Lincoln. Enjoy!

Counting Crows Go Label Free!

Hi folks, I just wanted to update you with a big announcement we just received. After 18 years signed to Geffen Records, the Counting Crows have announced they will part ways with the label Giant.

Lead Singer Adam Duritz posted a lengthy message on the front of the band's Web site today explaining their decision.

"Eighteen years ago, Counting Crows was just a little band from Berkeley. Geffen Records helped put us on the map and then they were our partner for almost two decades," Duritz said. "We want to thank every person who worked hard for so many years to make us a successful band. We're going to go out now and see what the world has to offer a band with a lot of ideas and a lot of energy and, hopefully, a lot of years left in a career that's already surpassed our wildest dreams."

I had the opportunity to meet Duritz and the members of the Counting Crows while they were touring with John Mayer about five years ago. I found the entire band to seem remarkably genuine and totally into their fans and their music. With that in mind it seems the decision to strike out on their own for new adventures should suit the already celebrated band.

Hi All,

We were very excited to hear that the American Idol runner-up, David Archuleta would be making a trip to Northampton on Monday. Unfortunately, even though his management was gracious enough to give us some last minute tickets, and emergency came up and we weren't able to attend. However, we've heard from a lot of people that the show was great. Also, we found practically the whole show from a great Youtube user for Archuleta fans named DJBell.

Fans waited in line starting at 9 a.m for the sold out gig. Archie, as his fans refer to him, performed a sold-out show of new stuff, as well as a medley of some of his personal favorites including "One" by U2 and "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz. Won't You Be My Neighbor?

In life, many of us seek out enriching experiences and fascinating people we can spend our time with. Sometimes, however, these people and experiences seem to walk right through our door as if in a moment of historic unexpected fate. As is the case, quite literally, with my friend Shira Erlichman. Shira walked through my door about 6 months ago, as she lives in the apartment underneath us. However, it turns out that Shira is one of the most uniquely creative and inspired people I have ever encountered.

An accomplished poet and musician, Shira was bred amongst the underground Whitehaus Family of artists and musicians in Jamaica Plain, Ma. She uses words and music to convey experience and imagination in often jaw-dropping ways. Her imagery, projection, control of language, and graceful humility have made her a must-see on the local scene.

We recently attended a performance of The Spilljoy ensemble, the four-piece poetry group that Shira is currently touring with which includes poets Danny Sherrard (Seattle), Jon Sands (New York City), and Ken Arkind (Denver). It is an understatement to say these four were provocative, and at center stage was the little girl from downstairs with a booming voice and a heavy heart. She spoke with passion, indulgence, and often times a great deal of humor. Her poetry and delivery are so polished, she seems as though she is much older than she is.

Following the performance, Shira and I had a phone conversation. Here's how it went.

Mike - What has it been like to be on tour with the Spilljoy Ensemble?

Shira - It’s been awesome. We’re in a different place, performing for different audiences almost every night. They all have just been so amazing.

Mike - What's the writing process like for Shira Erlichman?

Shira - For me it's always unfolding. Sometimes the words come like torrential waters and I feel like I am just lucky when the flood gates break. Other times I feel like it is like Chinese water torture. Mostly if it’s not happening I let it rest. I really like to play a lot. I think playing is when I'm most productive.

Mike - Which seems to come more natural to you, writing music or poetry?

Shira - It's not really pinpointable. I have had summers where I have written forty songs and can't seem to eek out a single poem. However, there have been summers that are completely the other way around. It is all just about the mood I am in.

Mike - What expectations do you have for yourself as a writer? How do you want to be perceived?

Shira - I hope that my writing opens language up to kind of dance and it does freaky fire storm kinds of things. I hope that it opens the way we see things. Most of all, I hope that I can make people uncomfortable and leave their safety net.

Mike - Would you rather be at home or on the road?

Shira - I have really liked the road. I think most of my difficulties lie in the stagnancy. When I’m on the road, I'm doing what I want to do and what I love to do. It all is falling into place because I want to do it. I wake up every morning and I am excited. That's a terrific feeling.

So at this point you are probably so excited for the opportunity to be Shira's neighbor too, if even just for a night. Well you're in luck. I know a few ways you can get to know Ms. Erlichman.

Ellis Paul at the Iron Horse

So as promised we recently spent the evening at the Iron Horse with Ellis Paul, and I truly can't think of a better way to spend a Friday night.

About 15 minutes before show time I scurried downstairs to run to the bathroom before Ellis' set. His dressing room is about 10 yards from the bathroom, and as I made my way I could hear Ellis playing guitar and singing with his full gusto. I know it might not seem this big, but I think details like this show why Ellis Paul is one of the most practiced musicians I have ever seen.

I have seen Ellis Paul several times live. Every time he is dress a notch about casual, his pitch is right on, and his guitar playing is perfect. But how could the same man who puts so much work into his songwriting, not apply the same ethic to his live performance.

I have had the opportunity to interview both Ellis Paul and Vance Gilbert, who are the best of friends. Both performers take live performance very, very seriously, and it is apparent, because there are no two folk shows that are more all-around entertaining then when those two hit the stage.

For our most recent encounter with Ellis, he performed amazing classics like "Speed of Trees," "Angels in Manhattan," "Home," and "The World Ain't Slowin' Down." In addition, Paul broke out charming renditions of some new songs including his sure to be big hit "Hurricane Angel."

Throughout the night his voice was immaculate. He even took a moment to sing some acapella, which seemed to fill the sold out Iron Horse.

If you get the chance to see Ellis, don't pass it up. Also, keep your eye out for his new album expected early next year.

Human beings wait in line for any number of things on a daily basis, causing irritation, panic disorders, and road rage. However, none of these instances seems to duplicate the annoyance of standing in line at the DMV. So last time Boston Folk Legend and songwriting genius Ellis Paul was waiting for the motor vehicle Gods to pull his card, he decided to give Pioneer in the Valley a call. Here's what he's been up to.

PIV: What and who inspires you?

EP: I get inspired from all sorts of different sources. The story of what I am capturing for each song is generally a different inspiration each time. I also obviously love great books, great movies, photographs, and great paintings. I'm always keeping an eye out for different forms of inspiration.

PIV: What’s the writing process like for you?

EP: Nowadays I get an idea and I carry it around with me to shows, and I will edit it in the car. I usually will get an idea and then I sit down with a guitar and work with some guitar pattern and come up with the lyrics from there.

PIV: What's in your CD player right now?

EP: Right now I am listening to seventeen of my own songs trying to figure out which will make the cut for the new record. It has been really helpful for me.

PIV: When can we expect some new Ellis Paul material?

EP: It looks like Probably by summer or early fall.

PIV: What can we expect from the new album?

EP: It's interesting because I’m listening to the songs right now and they are kind of all over the place. There is some country, some folk, a little electric rock. We are going to do a hybrid record with singer songwriters and rock and roll type stuff.

PIV: Anything on the new disc that you are really excited about?

EP: Yeah, there is a song called "Hurricane Angel" that I like a lot. It's a story I wrote about a Hurricane Katrina victim. As far a story song, it’s one of my best.

PIV: Is being on the road so much still enjoyable after all of these years?

EP: Of course. I love to play, it is a huge part of the whole process. I love playing, I am not always in love with the travel and spending time away from my kids, but once I’m there I really enjoy playing in front of an audience.

PIV: Do your kids share the same passion for music so far?

EP: I think the do because it is a central part of their life. They seem to be really into it. I don’t wish upon them a life as a folk musician though.

PIV: I spoke with Vance Gilbert this past summer and he had some kind words to say about you, how can you describe that friendship?

EP: Vance has been a touchstone of my life, not only as a friend, but we have had some epic moments together. He has attended and sang at both of my weddings. And on September 11th, I ended up talking and walking with he and his girlfriend and talking about what had happened. It was one of those moments that extends beyond our musical friendship.

But we also have this great partnership where we can bounce songs and albums off each other. He is just someone that can always be a barometer for where I am at.

PIV: If you weren’t a musician what would you be doing?

EP: I wouldn’t mind being a writer or a painter. I think it would still be something in a creative field.

PIV: If you could work with another artist, who would it be?

EP: I would love to work with Neil Young some time. I think he would definitely be my first choice as a songwriter.

PIV: What’s one thing that would surprise your fans to know about Ellis Paul?

EP: I’m a big AC/DC. I was a fan when I a kid and they put out this great new album and I’ve been listening to it a lot.

Badass Lady!

The following report is from Chris' experience watching Bettye Lavette at the Iron Horse Gig. Last week.

Having seen a couple shows at the Iron horse, I was excited to see a genuine soul singer in person at such an intimate venue. We got in just in time to get a good seat upstairs as her band began to play and ramp up for the show. After a couple great blues tunes she came up from the dressing room, sparkling in a black and rhinestone outfit that hung just right on her out-of-this-world body.

Her energy was electric from the beginning. She kicked and shimmied around the stage, singing strongly and pulsing her body, using both voice and physicality as one single instrument. Her voice itself is so powerful she doesn't need a microphone and at one point she proved it, sending spine tingling vocalizations out into the hall with no microphone and no difficulty at all. Whether she was performing an up-tempo tune or a grinding, soulful lament, she was able to turn the four feet of Iron horse stage into a stadium.

It felt like a special show, especially after she shared with us that the last time she was in town a year ago, we sent her on her way into, as she phrased it, the best year of her entire life. That is certainly saying something considering her forty-seven year career that began when she was just sixteen years old. This is one of the things I love about Northampton- so many artists feel at home here.

The best part of the night came after her exit to a standing ovation, when she returned for an encore and sang a song that she had compiled the lyrics for with music from her musical director. She had already detailed earlier how in just the last six years she had been hoping for gigs that would pay even fifty dollars, and how grateful she is to have been "brought out of the crypt," as she quipped. This song, about staying strong with the other girls, singing for forty years no matter who told her she wouldn't fit in, and now, finally,after all that time, getting to watch as the money comes rolling in was definitely her best. I know I felt no shame in applauding that. She is a bad-ass lady, and a soul icon, and I'm glad she is finally getting her due.

You Bet, It's Bettye Lavette!

You might not know her yet, but you wish you did.

Bettye Lavette has been making music since she was 16. And now in her sixties, this gem soul Goddess is still bringing down the house all across the country. As a teenager, she was touring with some big names, including personal favorites Otis Redding and Ben E. King. In 1982, she signed with the historic Motown Records, and while her career has had its shares of ups and downs, be sure to count today as a definite up.

In 2005, Bettye released the critically acclaimed "I've Got My Own Hell to Raise" which included her brilliant reinventions of great tunes by Sinead O'Connor, Dolly Parton, and Lucinda Williams. She finally began to strike through to audiences as a pearl of soul music.

Today, Bettye looks hot and sounds hotter. Her most recent album, Scene of the Crime, is impeccable. It's as if every little vex and whisper in her tone and voice has been tucked away in a humidor somewhere. She sounds every bit of what newcoming wannabees like Amy Winehouse and Adele wish they could be.

You MUST check out her cover of the Boss' Streets of Philadelphia, or dare I say, her cover of a Neil Young classic! Yes, Lavette attempts to cover the great Neil Young classic "Heart of Gold," and I believe she knocks it out of the park.

Lucky for you last minute Valley residents, Lavette is returning to the Iron Horse tomorrow Night! She is playing a 7 p.m. show that is sure to sell out so get your tickets here now! You won't be disappointed. I can't make so let us know how it went.

Congratulations to Sharon Goldberg of Brooklyn, NY and Carol Leffler of New Britain, CT, they are the winners of our Dar Williams trivia contest. Sharon will be receiving a copy of Dar's new CD "Promised Land," and Carol will get a copy of "Live At Bearsville," Dar's full-length concert DVD. Both are amazing scores. Good job ladies!

I should mention as well that we got the chance to check Dar on Dec. 26 at an intimate Iron Horse show. We have seen Dar many times, but never has her humor been so on point, and her voice so flawless. We went to the second of two shows, so I am not sure if she was just extra warmed up, but she sounded positively angelic.

Both shows were sold out, which is rare for any artist these days, but it shows just how much of a draw the local hero is. If you haven't already checked out the new album, I want to give you one more chance to pick up "Promised Land" here. Also, go see her renowned live shows if you get a chance at any of the following venues.

Valley Fleece Fiesta A Success!

If you couldn't tell by the title, the first ever Valley Fleece Fiesta was a huge success. We made dozens of blankets for local homeless individuals and families last Thursday, and had a great time while doing it. Our friends at ABC40 stopped by to join in on the fun. Hello All. So I am really excited to announce my first attempt at organizing a charity event! The first every Valley Fleece Fiesta will take place this Thursday, Dec. 18 at the First Church of Northampton from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Volunteers at the event will enjoy holiday music and cocoa while creating warm and durable, fleece no-sew blankets that will be donated to Friends of Hampshire County Homeless Individuals of Florence and the Hampshire County Interfaith Emergency Homeless Shelter.

According to a March 2008 article in the Daily Hampshire Gazette newspaper, “Nearly 5,000 people in the Pioneer Valley experienced homelessness last year. About half of them were parents and children, and many have been homeless for more than a year.”
Yvonne Freccero, President of Friends of Hampshire County Homeless Individuals says this year may be even worse.

“This winter shelters will be hard pressed to take care of the increasing number of people who will find themselves homeless,” Freccero said.

It is with this in mind that community members have come together to provide some of these residents with one New England necessity – blankets. Local organizations and businesses such as The Textile Co. of Greenfield, ServiceNet of Northampton, and the First Churches of Northampton, have extended their great generosity by supporting this event.

Who needs American Idol Anyways?

In the past seven seasons, American Idol has picked some of the best-selling artists to top the charts. However, I have found that this doesn't necessarily qualify the Fox show as an accurate measure of talent. Case in point, Josiah Leming. You might remember Leming as the young Tenneseean musician who was living in his car at the time of his AI audition. Or maybe you remember him as the emotional teen who got booted early on for cockily calling away the house band during an audition performance. If only some of our teenage mistakes were aired to millions of people.

Today, Leming has proven he cannot be dismissed that easily. He has now signed with Warner Brother Records and is set to release a full album early next year. The five-song EP titled "Angels Undercover" is out now and is available here.

Now, not that American Idol doesn't attract some very talented voices sometimes, but the truth is that the show is far more a karaoke competition than a talent contest that feeds the American hunger for human embarrassment. If you need proof, look up Paula Goodspeed's story here.

Josiah left home at 17 as a struggling musician, looking for a way to support his family -- eight siblings (six of whom are adopted), an out-of-work stepfather, and a mother with terminal cancer. He traveled the southeast playing open-mic nights and sleeping in his car before auditioning for American Idol. Following his dismissal from the show, he was spotted by a manager and soon signed with Warner Brothers.

Leming is next in line (see Clay Aiken and Jennifer Hudson) to be living proof, however, that one can succeed after Idol. His songs on the EP show a breadth of songwriting talent for a young kid, and a knack for the piano.

Antje Wish Your Singer/Songwriter Was Hot Like Her? Antje?

Man, were we impressed by the modest but extremely talented Antje Duvekot. The show was in the ever-funky orange doused Goldstein Lounge at the gorgeous Smith College. We got there early, and though there was only about a handful of people, Antje really put on a great set. She was a little shy, but talked often about politics and the economy. Even at one point noting that she couldn't help to feel guilty about the Bank of America collapse after the banking giant used one of her songs in their advertisements last year.

As I continue on this interesting journey of writing a blog, I have found that I am continually being introduced to new and often wonderful musicians. Most recently I was attempting to score an interview with one of my favorite folkies, Ellis Paul, when I was introduced to the music of Antje Duvekot (pronounced: Aunt-ya Doo-va-kot), a great new up and coming artist on Paul's label.

Duvekot has been making the rounds all over the country now for a while in support of her album "Big Dream Boulevard." She is now turning a lot of heads, and her song "Merry-Go-Round" was even featured in a Bank of America commercial last year.

So, on Thursday, Pioneer in the Valley is going to be heading over to the Goldstein Lounge at the Campus Center of Smith College to see Antje for FREE! Let me repeat FREE! From what I have heard of this woman so far, this will be one of the last times you get an opportunity to see her for free.

Antje's voice has this subtle tremble to it that magnifies the emotion in her deeply thoughtful and personal lyrics. She also plays a pretty mean acoustic guitar, and to top it off, I think the only thing more strikingly beautiful than her lyrics is her. She seems to be a very stunning girl.
